Your Game Will Soar Like the Hawks at Red Tail Golf Club in Fort Devens, MA

Updated: Jul 20, 2020

Red Tail Golf Club in Fort Devens, MA, is one of the most attractive public courses for golfers to play in Massachusetts. Named after the red-tailed hawks that roam the skies, it is a Brian Silva designed, 7,000-yard, par 72 golf course. The chosen site for the golf course was previously part of the Army training grounds for Ft. Devens. Golfers will find great natural beauty combined with interesting histories, as the course flows over rolling wooded hills while meandering through the land. It is the first golf course in New England to be certified as an Audubon International Cooperative Signature. It is also no surprise that this scenic and challenging course is one of Massachusetts' most popular public golf courses.

One of the best feelings about playing this course is how it feels like it has width for golfers to play into. Golfers enjoy the hitting tee shots to wide fairways, especially when they have their driver in their hands. Many of the green sites are surrounded by hills or mounds to stop wayward shots. It is like all the approach shots are being funneled towards the hole by the surrounding hills. They also have roomy shaved collars and aprons that allow golfers different options to get the ball close from near the green.

Golfers will find numerous bunkers at Red Tail. While much of the bunkering can look daunting from the tee, there are more bunkers that for aesthetics than for penalizing poor shots. For example, there are only one or two bunkers that golfers must be aware of on the par 5, second hole, however there close to ten bunkers total as they provide the backdrop to the tee shot behind the fairway. The use of wasteland type bunkers on 7, 16, and 17 adds some much-needed variety to the course's numerous bunkers. The golf course design has very little water but plenty of naturalized areas that golfers will not be able to look for their golf balls.

The short game will also be tested at Red Tail, not just in quality but in depth. The green complexes featured generous trimmed approach areas around the greens that will welcome low running shots from afar or a bump and run from the green sides. These areas can also help ease a golfers' shots back to the green with their contouring. From experienced golfers to high handicappers and novices, all will glean pleasure from being in these areas.

Most golfers would prefer to ride in a cart, which is included in the price while enjoying their round here. However, the layout does allow for golfers to walk without much extra exertion. Most tees are a short walk from the previous green sites. While elevation changes are dramatic, the elevation changes are steeper coming down while the climbs back up are over a greater distance with less grade.

One of the reasons Red Tail remains a favorite in the area is the conditions. It would be hard to find a time in the season when the conditions are not pristine. There are no bad days at Red Tail Golf Club. The website also provides insights into golf as they feature each hole with a short video showcasing the strategy and backstories.

The terrain varies from classic New England landscapes of tall trees to tall grasses and sands reminiscent of a links or coastal course. Brian Silva designed course works with the site's beautiful features. The landscape and the army base provided an enormous variety in the land that Silva was able to find within the property to make these holes feel unique. The design also provides golfers with risk-reward opportunities, punch bowl templates, links-style holes, dramatic changes in elevation, and natural contouring, which offer an interesting mix while keeping the feel of New England throughout the course.

Most golfers will find the price to be right with the conditions and quality of golf they will find here at Red Tail Golf Club. Also, Red Tail features two price drops, one after 2:30 pm, then again after 5 pm with the practice range included in a round of golf.

While most golfers commonly speak of the course's conditions, the most memorable part, though, is how visibly outstanding course is to the eye. Most flags can be seen from the tee boxes while the in-course scenery provides remarkable views. The course itself is photogenic and keeps the golfer's attention throughout.
