The Gem in the Emerald Necklace...George Wright Golf Course in Hyde Park, MA

Updated: Apr 2, 2020

This golf course is a gem in the “emerald necklace” of Boston parks. A Donald Ross design that no one can overlook if they are looking for an authentic golf experience.

As I have stated in my previous post about Franklin Park, I will tell you first that this course is remarkable. The lack of money invested over the years has had an impact. Now, this course is on the rise. There was a million-dollar restoration of the clubhouse, an investment by the City of Boston. That restored some of the original lusters from its inauguration.

Last year, as a tribute to the hard work that has gone into the course, the Massachusetts Amateur Championship was hosted here. This lead to the rebuilding of a new teeing ground for the 11th hole. And the clearing of overgrowth on the 18th hole. They have not stopped with improvements as this year, and they revamped the 12th hole by adding more teeing ground, extending the fairway, and creating a new cart path. Also, they cleared out overgrowth on the right side of the 9thhole, hopefully making it easier for golf shots that find the right side to kick back to the fairway.

It’s the same cost to play here as it is Franklin Park, or if you buy a membership, you get both courses. I believe it’s a great place to play for the price, the design, and the location.

Conditions: Remains the same as last year, with some improvements in surrounding areas of the holes and an improved 12th hole. Difficulty: Donald Ross designed the course to be played from the tips with only a 220 to 240-yard drive without much stress. Some holes, narrow and long with changes in elevation, may seem more challenging. Practice Green: The putting green is a bit harder and faster than the rest of the course. It is usually the last to be cut in the morning due to the early tee times. Value: I believe this is an excellent course for the price, the Donald Ross design, and its location within Boston. Range: This course does not have a driving range. However, 10 minutes away is Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course of Brookline, formally known as Putterham, which has a driving range. Wear a hard-hat: Trees, typical of the northeast, surround the holes. There are still a couple of places that golfers need to be aware of people teeing off. After all, this is a Muni.
