Leo J. Martin Memorial Golf Course in Weston, MA

Updated: Mar 31, 2020

What starts as a seemingly innocuous nine holes of municipal golf, Leo J. Martin makes a turn for the best as the back nine will light up your golf senses. The golf played on the front nine is a bit pedestrian and sort of lulls the golfer to sleep. Then the golfers step on to the back nine, and everything changes. The once seemingly innocuous golf course that is uninteresting and mundane shows its true beauty on the back nine. It reveals an entirely different nine that any golfer will find stimulating to play.

It is a very easy course to play, walk, and score well. There is not much resistance to scoring on the front nine. It has the most classic two bunker designs around the greens and not much else to keep the golfer from scoring well. This is a place where for nine holes, a golfer can go with the spray and play method of golf while the back nine requires the golfer to shape shots and hone their accuracy.

This course is a delight to walk. The front remains flat, leaving only nine holes that have any significant changes in elevations. However, it never feels like you are climbing up or down a hill. The grades of the slopes move you gently up or down with subtly. There is a lot to be desired from the greens. They seemed to be suffering from the summer’s heat and didn’t seem to recover well from the fall aeration. The fairways were rolling hard, and the course was on the greener side as the weather was cooling down. It is a tale of two nines that could have golfers split as to how good the golf really is at Leo J. Martin Golf Course. It also features golf at a low price as it has some of the most inexpensive golf in the area. It is $30 or less to play eighteen on the weekends will have most people excited to play the course.

The back nine was the most memorable part because of the extreme difference between the two nines. Lastly, the 18th hole will challenge even the best of golfers. It is a 570-yard par 5 that bends along the Charles River.

Conditions: Conditions were ok. The greens were trying to come back from a tough summer, and aeration holes had not filled it completely from weeks before. Difficulty: Definitely an uncomplicated golf course for all skill levels. Practice Green: There is a practice green; however, there was some work being done to improve it. Value: Good value for the golf as it is $30 or less for 18 holes. Range: Yes, there is a full-sized range located on-site. Wear a hard-hat: Definitely will need a hard-hat on the front nine, then you can put away for the back nine.
