Highfields Golf and Country Club in Grafton, MA.

Updated: Apr 2, 2020

Highfields Golf and Country Club is a public course with a private golf course feel that is located less than an hour's drive from Boston in Grafton, MA. Highfields opened in 2003 and was designed by Mungeam Cornish Golf Design. They have created many well-liked courses in Massachusetts, including Butter Brook and Cyprian Keyes. Highfields Golf and Country Club prides itself on the golf experience. There is a beautiful clubhouse with a restaurant, a ballroom for events, and a fully stocked golf shop that features more than just Highfields Golf swag. They did a great job making me feel like a member for the day as they are also friendly and well organized. They have a practice facility for a warm-up that includes a practice green, a practice bunker and chipping green, and iron only range. Range balls are not included in the daily fee paid to play the course; however, the golf cart is.

There are plenty of options for golfers to choose from as the course can play as long as 7,021 yards from the back tees or 5,266 total Yards from the front tees. The greens are fast, smooth, and small. The fairways are plush but not too fluffy. I also liked that the ball tends to sit up in the rough, and there are few bare spots on the course, which would result in a bad lie to hit a golf ball. The course is well marked for hazards. I found that playing from the back tees was not overwhelming and were not any holes that felt like they were just trying to stretch it out to reach a total of more than 7,000 yards. The course is more fairway than rough in most places, which makes the holes feel welcoming.

Conditions: The course was in excellent condition and well-marked. Difficulty: It has some problematic holes but nothing unfair, and nothing that plays impossibly long and hard. Practice Green: There is a practice green for putting only. There is also a practice bunker and a green set up for chipping and sand shots only. However, the green is not cut like the greens on the course. It is more like short rough. Value: I think for the money paid, there is good value here for a course that is under an hour's drive from Boston. $70 for 18 holes, and it includes a cart on the weekends. Range: Yes, there is a range. It is limited in size, and they only allow irons to be hit off the grass or mats. They do keep the grass open for non-members. Wear a hard hat: The holes are well spaced apart.
