Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course aka Putterham in Brookline, MA

Updated: Mar 31, 2020

Originally a Stiles and Van Kleek design, Brookline Golf Course has been offering golf to the public since 1931. It also features a statue of a young Francis Ouimet with his caddie walking together. Francis Ouimet was born, raised, and educated nearby the Robert T. Lynch Municipal golf course in the Putterham schoolhouse, which you can still visit today. Francis Ouimet is famous for winning the 1913 U.S. Open just a hundred yards away at The Country Club in Brookline.

The course plays short at 6,400 yards but challenges the player to hit most of the clubs in their bag. There are no gimmicks on the course. Most of the holes are straightforward. The course can give more birdies than takeaway pars, which will add to how much fun and enjoyment the golfers will have on the course.

The course is wide open in most places, so hitting wild shots will not make it difficult to get back to the green. The greens though, are heavily bunkered throughout the course, protecting them from inaccurate shots. The green complexes vary along with the required shots to approach them correctly. However, most players will find the most resistance when scoring will come from the ditches that carry water throughout the course. These sneaky hazards will attract running shots, wayward shots, long shots, and short shots.

This course does vary in terrain, and there are plenty of appealing holes from the original design and modifications made since then. Some of the favorites are the 12th and 14th holes, and also the 4th, 7th, and the 11th are worth mentioning as well. It is not the toughest course to walk. Most will find that walking this course, even on the hottest days in Brookline to be enjoyable.

The course has seen many improvements over the years, and it continues to improve how the course looks aesthetically. The summer heat does take away some of the lush green looks that the course has in the spring and fall. However, it still plays well. One of the most considerable improvement to the course is actually off the course. The golf course installed a driving range. They offer a full range with different size buckets making it one of the best places to practice in the area.

Conditions: Conditions are satisfactory and will vary depending on rain and heat. Difficulty: The course is 6,400 yards from the back tips and will play easy for most levels of golfers. Practice Green: Yes, there is a practice green that allows chipping. Value: Good value at around $50 per round on the weekends. Range: Yes, there is a relatively new range that was added a few years ago. Wear a hard-hat: Yes, bring a hard hat. There are plenty of opportunities to wear the hard-hat at the Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course in Brookline.
