Atkinson Resort and Country Club, in Atkinson, NH

Updated: Apr 2, 2020

Atkinson Resort and Country club is only a 50-minute drive from Boston located in southern New Hampshire. It has a great practice facility for the public, a well-stocked golf shop, a golf academy, a restaurant, and a par-3 course.

The practice facility has a member and non-member sections. The main difference is the members can use the grass hitting areas, whereas the non-members are only able to use the mats. They offer unlimited range balls, which is incredible for warming up both the long game and short game. There is a large practice green with flat and uneven areas. You are allowed to chip anywhere on the practice green. Also, the practice area features another short game area. However, that is a member-only feature. Located at Atkinson's practice facility is a golf academy. It is on the other side of the range with covered bays for hitting in all types of weather.

If you are up for playing 18 holes or even 9 holes, there is a par-3 course located at Atkinson that is in beautiful shape. There is not much info about the par-3 course on the website. Booking a tee time is easy when setting up a tee time online. The restaurant was full the whole time I was there as I came and left due to weather. It offers a fantastic vista of the 18th hole. As golfers finish, you can see their approach to and putts on the green from an elevated vantage point in the restaurant.

Some of the features that stuck out to me was the flat bunkers that seemed to be hidden all over the course. This required some walking or driving up the fairway and checking the hole layout on the scorecard while playing. There is no much water on the course. Only three holes feature water. The second or third shot to the par-5 2nd is visually the most daunting shot on the course. The green is located on a peninsula that is surrounded by a pond.

Also, be sure to visit the hole by hole on the website, which is terrific for golfers who have not golfed at Atkinson before. They offer flyovers of every hole and some pro tips from the Atkinson Golf and Resort golf professionals that could help lower your score.

Conditions: The course was in excellent condition, well-marked, and had a walker-friendly layout. Difficulty: The bunkers felt flat and hard to see from the tee or fairway, which added to the challenge. No many forced carries or water on this course. Practice Green: The practice green was expansive and ran similar to the rest of the course. You are also able to chip on this green. Value: Good value here for a course that is under an hour's drive from Boston. $70 for 18 holes, and it includes a cart and unlimited range balls. Range: Yes, there is a range. It is free for daily golfers. Wear a hard hat: There is plenty of space at this golf course. The holes are well spaced. No hole felt too close to another. Very few holes play side by side and you rarely see more than 1 other hole on the golf course.
